All too often organisations believe that simply providing some form of new or additional incentive is the answer to increased motivation, focus and determination. In many cases it can have a negative effect, actually de-motivating large numbers of your target audience.

It is like giving someone all the bits from a 1,000-piece jigsaw in a bag and as they struggle to do it, offering them a reward in order to try and get them to completed it more quickly. Is that motivation, or just more pressure leading to frustration? Offer the same person a reward, but as part of the process also help them to find the box the jigsaw came in, with the picture on the cover - now that is motivation.
